I recently voted in support of House bill 4257, known as the Farmland Preservation bill, which will protect Michigan farms from encroaching suburban sprawl. I grew up on a small farm and I strongly believe that the family farm is a great tradition in Lenawee County and across Michigan. Development removes about 75,000 acres of Michigan farmland each year. Most of those acres come from mid-size family farms. The good news is that Michigan’s small family farms are on the rise and make up around 60 percent of farms in the state. The small farm helps local communities and it strengthens local economies. Farms deserve our support and this legislation gives our farmers and their families the tools they need to fend off the unchecked development that is all around us. We cannot allow this great tradition, of the family farm, to fall by the wayside.
