LANSING, Mich. - State Representative Dudley Spade today announced that the City of Tecumseh will be receiving $375,000 in federal transportation money to help pay to resurface Adrian Street between W. Chicago/M-50 and W. Russell Rd. The project is being funded through a program established by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in an effort to invest federal transportation dollars in small urban communities in Michigan.
"For local residents it is just as important that the city roads and streets they travel everyday be kept in as good of repair as our state highways," Representative Spade said. "I want to commend MDOT for recognizing this need and helping local communities address their transportation needs. Projects like this are especially important when local funding is tight and cities, like Tecumseh, would have trouble putting together the $468,750 that this project is going to cost."
Tecumseh is one of twenty-one small urban areas in 20 Michigan counties undertaking projects like this. In total, Michigan communities will receive more than $7 million in FY 2008 in federal transportation funding for road improvements and transit projects that range from resurfacing and reconstructing roads to purchasing buses. The federal funding is awarded at a maximum of $375,000 per project to small urban areas with a population base of 5,000 to 50,000. Agencies receiving federal dollars must provide a 20 percent match in funds.
