LANSING - State Representative Dudley Spade (D-Tipton) today voted for a second time to accelerate the repeal of the state's Single Business Tax (SBT).
"Lenawee County and the State of Michigan have needed this tax repeal for a long time." Spade said. "I voted in March of this year to accelerate the repeal of the SBT and my position has not changed. I was disappointed that this initiative failed the first time, but I am pleased that we are now moving forward. Accelerating the repeal of this tax will put us in a more competitive position to create jobs and attract businesses to our state."
The House today passed a petition initiative, which will repeal the state's SBT, effective December 31, 2007. The tax had been scheduled to be phased out by December 31, 2009; today's vote accelerates that timeline. The Legislature has promised it will work to find a replacement for the SBT, which is widely criticized.
